Edward E. “Popeye” Benway, 76

 

Edward E. "Popeye" Benway, 76, of Elizabeth Street, passed away on March 6, 2008 at his home in Whitehall with his daughter, Tina, at his side.

 

Born on December 12, 1931 in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Eli and Victoria (Besaw) Benway.

 

 He was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army on July 10, 1953, while stationed at Ft. Dix, N.J. He is a retired employee of E. B. Metal in Whitehall. He was a member of the American Legion Post #83 of Whitehall and was honored as Legionnaire of the Year in 1992-93.
 He is survived by his daughter, Tina Stevenson and her husband, Tracy, and grandsons Curtis and Jake; his son, Edward Benway and granddaughter, Chelsie; three sisters, Mildred Goff and her husband, Charles, Gladys Ballard, and Irena Austin and her husband, Charles, and his ex-wife, Anne Rodd and many nieces and nephews.

 

 A funeral service was conducted on March 10, 2008 at the Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams Street, Whitehall with the Rev. Sung Lee, Pastor of the Bay Road Presbyterian Church, Queensbury, officiating.

 

 Family and friends called at the Jillson Funeral Home, Inc., 46 Williams Street, Whitehall, New York on Saturday, March 8. 

 

 Interment followed at the Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.

 

  Family and friends shared fellowship and refreshments at the American Legion, Post #83, Main Street, Whitehall on Monday, March 10.
