Quilters enjoy weekend

The celebration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of what is now Whitehall had its feature event over the weekend.

The anniversary quilt show was home to various exhibitors and vendors throughout July 24 and 25, and Carol Greenough said the event was very well attended.

“We had twice as many people as the previous quilt show,” said Greenough. “We had a broad variety of winners, and everyone that participated was very happy.”

Greenough said a variety of people displayed their quilts.

“We had quilts that were made by people who were quite young and all the way through to 94-years old,” said Greenough. “All of the quilts had some attention given to them, and the winners were all viewers’ choice.”

Along with the quilts on display, Greenough said there was also a great turnout for the quilt appraisals.

“They did about 16 appraisals, which was a full day for her,” said Greenough. “There were people that showed up cold and wanted to come in to schedule an appointment, and they were pinched in. It was a heavy day for the appraiser.”

Along with all things quilt, the event also had a successful day offering commemorative stamp cancellations through the U.S. Postal Service.

“The stamps went quite well,” said Greenough. “We sold about 50 at the event. The postmaster was very pleased.”

Greenough added the cancellation would be continuing throughout the next month.

“For the next 30 days, people can send a self-addressed stamped envelope and the post office will return that with the stamp cancellation. I took something in this morning and asked that it be stamped with the date’s cancellation,” she said.

Greenough said requests for the cancellation commemorating the 250th anniversary of Whitehall were received from far beyond the borders of the town it celebrates.

“Since the cancellation was reported on in the Postal Service’s monthly bulletin, they have had responses from across the country.”
