Katherine Danforth, 71

K atherine Danforth passed away peacefully in her sleep Nov. 8, 2010.

Katherine was born on Dec. 17, 1938, in Bennington, Vt., and grew up in Manchester, Vt., the daughter of William and Louise (Balch) Hulett. She married Clifford E. Danforth from East Rupert, Vt., in November of 1958.

Katherine graduated from Burr and Burton High School in 1957. She worked for New England Bell Co. for a number of years and also drove taxi in Manchester to earn additional cash to be used for Christmas gifts. She had also been employed for a brief time at Mountain Weavers in Dorset, Vt., which she also greatly enjoyed.

Katherine had an amazing memory for numbers. This included the ability to remember not only dates, but phone numbers for years, along with license plates. This memory served her well while playing gin rummy with family and friends.

She had a way of blurting out just what she was thinking and telling how she felt. There might not be time to tell you later, even though she might have repeated herself many more times over the years.

Katherine enjoyed sewing and was especially good at creating the grandkids’ Halloween costumes every year. She loved playing the piano for her own entertainment. She loved her Irish and old country music. She also enjoyed documenting life through photography.

Family used the words cantankerous and gritty to describe Katherine. They attributed some of this, to her Irish heritage, thereby making her who she was. They also realized that she needed to be this way in order that she might survive farm life, which she shared for more than 30 years with her late husband, Clifford. Farm life found her carrying endless pails of milk to the bulk tank, tossing countless bales of hay and caring for calves from birth to their place in the herd of fine milking cows. In addition to these farm chores, Katherine kept the books for the farm and kept three square meals for family.

Katherine loved attending local antique tractor pulls and cheering for her daughter. She enjoyed the simple pleasures of watching the wildlife, chatting with her friends on the phone or keeping in touch via the now lost art of letter writing or sending pictures in a card.

Katherine was a Baptist but found that her prayer need not be confined to a building. She also prayed on the Mountain.

Katherine will be missed by all her “adopted kids up the valley” as she would call them. Kate and Cliff both enjoyed the visits and a cup of coffee or lunch with them sometimes.

Even though she died peacefully of a long illness, she wasn’t ready. She wanted to see her 4-year-old great granddaughter, Molly, grow up. She wasn’t ready to give up the pleasures brought to her by her grandchildren and their spouses.

Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Clifford E. Danforth.

Survivors are a daughter, Liz Capen and her husband, Dave; a grandson, Sgt. Harlen Capen and his wife Amy; a granddaughter, Elaine Harper and her husband, Adam; and of course a great- granddaughter, Molly Elizabeth Ann Louise Harper. She is also survived by her half sister, Ann Hodgin; sister Marge Morse; brothers William and John Hulett; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be graveside at North Rupert Cemetery on Friday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the North Rupert Cemetery, 237 Vt. Route 30, Pawlet, Vt. 05761 in care of Marion Tifft.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville.
