T he Whitehall varsity indoor track and field team will return several champions and state contenders in 2010-11.

“We have some very talented athletes,” said head coach Mike Collier, “just not enough bodies to compete in team score.”

The squad will be headlined by Kelsie Benjamin, the two-time Section II champion in the shot put as an indoor competitor (two-time state qualifier outdoors).

Other returning athletes include Wasaren League high hurdles champion Jake Evans, who also finished third in the long jump; two-time defending sectional racewalk champion Marion Gendron; and triple jump runner-up in the Wasaren League championships Jared DeRusha. Maggie Benjamin also returns to compete in the shot put.

Looking to fill the shoes of graduates Mickey Bezio, Travis Gonyea and Andrea Aber will be newcomers PJ Ferguson, a top cross-country runner who will compete in the distance events, and shot putters Georgette Hasson and Ryan St/ Clair.

The Railroaders’ first meet will be on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Union College at 1:30 p.m.
