M ore than 50 young basketball players from all over northeastern New York will be competing at Whitehall Central School Saturday, Jan. 8, in the annual Great Northern District Hoop Shoot sponsoring by Whitehall Elks Lodge No. 1491.

“It’s a great day for the kids,” said Elks member Herb Tracy, who coordinated the local, district and regional Elks’ Soccer Shoot competition last fall. Saturday’s winners advance to the regional competition  in East Greenbush, and those winners go on to the state competition in Poughkeepsie.

Registration is at 10 a.m., and the event will take about two hours. The competitors, who qualified through local events, will get pizza and drinks at the end of the event. Winners will get trophies.

Youth from lodges in Whitehall, Keysville, Plattsburgh, Saranac and Ticonderoga will be at the event.

There are separate competitions for boys and girls. The age classes are 8- and 9-year-olds, 10- and 11- year-olds and 12- and 13-year-olds.
