H orde third at C’s, seven to Sectionals
The Granville Golden Horde will send seven wrestlers to the Glens Falls Civic Center after the Class C Tournament Saturday, Feb. 5, in Corinth. Brendan Miller, Karl Palmer, Kurt Ehntholt, Eric Hastings, Hayden Miller, Christian Carr and David McCullen will have a shot at a section title for Granville at week’s end.
The host squad Tomahawks placed 10 wrestlers in the final and walked away with the team title, but the Horde put on a late charge to move into third place while crowning three champions of the four who made the final.
“I think we did just what we thought, for the most part,” Head Coach Steve Palmer said after the finals. “Having three champions is very good at this tournament.”
The host school ran two sets of mats during the final to help finish the tournament earlier, versus just one under a spotlight, due to the combination of rain, sleet and snow that had been pelting the region for much of the day.
Palmer said the team title was out of reach with the Horde down three wrestlers who were unable to compete and score vital points with what were expected to be place finishes; Steven Cohan, senior Justin Duel and Nathaniel Palmer were unable to wrestle.
Those who were able to wrestle did well as Karl Palmer (140) pinned his way through to repeat for the third time as C champion, needing just 1:46 to take care of Maple Hills’ Brendon Walsh.
Joining Palmer as a repeat champion, Eric Hastings (285) continued something of a tradition by pinning his finals opponent faster than Palmer, taking 1:15 to pin Alex D’Urso of Tamarac. Hastings took the fastest pin award the week prior with an eight-second pin, besting Palmer’s nine-second pin. “It feels good to be number one again but I’m hoping to go farther this year,” Hastings said. After taking a C title last season he failed to gain an at large bid to the states.
Recent member of the Granville 100-wins club, Brendan Miller (130), claimed his first C title with an 11-3 decision over Mike Mattat of Hoosick Falls. Miller said the 100th win was “just like any other” and it was the C title and what potentially lies beyond it that meant more to him. “I didn’t know how well I was going to do at 130. At first the weight was kind of unbearable because I jumped up from weighing in around 123, but I just tried my hardest and that’s what I always do,” Miller said.
“He’s worked really hard, he’ll go and do extra work after practice and it showed on the mats today,” Coach Palmer said of Miller.
Kurt Ehntholt could not close the gap to the 100-wins club as he fell by decision, 13-1, to Corinth’s Davin LeClair; at 98 Ehntholt needs just two wins to reach the career century mark.
The second place finish is his third in three years.
Afterward Ehntholt said he was pretty excited to think his 100th victory will be announced at the Civic Center. “The 100 club, it will be nice to finally get there,” Ehntholt said.
Coach Palmer said Ehntholt might have faced the toughest challenge of the day for a Granville wrestler. “He had a real challenge; (LeClair) is a real tough kid. (Ehntholt’s) been working really hard in the off season and it showed today and all season,” he said.
Ehntholt along with the top four finishers from the C and CC finals will meet with the Class D finalists at the Civic Center for the Section II Tournament starting Friday, Feb. 11, and ending Feb. 12; champions and “at-large” or “wildcard” winners continue on to the New York State Championships Feb. 25 and 26 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
