Robert Henry Swinton, 87,

R obert Henry Swinton, 87, died peacefully at his home with loving family members present at his side on Tuesday February 22, 2011.

Robert (Bob) was born on July 19, 1923 to Henry T. and Elsie (Kingsley) Swinton in Whitehall, NY. He was a graduate of Whitehall High School. He began his railroad career with the D&H Railroad as a fireman in 1941 and continued as Engineer until 1985 when he retired in order to spend more time with his wife Emily.  Bob enlisted in the Navy, Gunner’s Mate 2nd class and served his country faithfully from 1943-1946. On February 12, 1944, while on leave from the service, he married Emily Bigelow. Together, in Whitehall, they raised their family.

Robert enjoyed his family, family reunions, travel, vegetable and flower gardening, maintaining his land, getting together with ‘railroad buffs’, navy reunions and good friends throughout the years. He was a member of the Whitehall United Methodist Church.

He supported and enjoyed the LST 582 Reunion Group since 1984, NYS Amphibious Forces Association INC, United States LST Association, Historical Society of Whitehall, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Association since 1987, the Bridgeline Historical Society, the American Legion Post 83 of Whitehall. He was a charter member of the National WWW2 Memorial of Washington DC and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Teamsters.

Besides his parents, Robert was pre-deceased by his wife Emily in 1989, his wife Alice (Wheawill) and his beloved “special lady” Audrey (Senical) and 4 sisters, Louise (Riley), Irene (Moore), Alice (Powers) and Sylvia (Kaulfuss).

Robert is survived by his 6 children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and several beloved nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by cherished children of the heart, David and Cindi (Senical), Justin and Kristin (Senical) Quiet and their children Grace Ann and Kaelie Adeline Quiet.

Visitation will be at Mason Funeral Home, 18 George St. Fort Ann, NY on Sunday February 27, 2011 from 1-3pm. American Legion Post No. 83 will conduct a service at 1:30 pm. Christian Services with Rev. Roberta Proper officiating will follow at 3pm.

Family members suggest that memorials may be sent to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum Association, 4472 Basin Harbor Rd., Vergennes VT 05491.
