Tyke’s Tourney March 6

Tyke’s Fishing Derby is so much a part of a Whitehall winter that last year the ice-fishing tourney went on despite the fact there was no ice on South Bay.

“We didn’t have any ice last year, and the kids still had a great time,” said Elaine Phillips, who is busty organizing for this year’s tournament, which will run from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m., Sunday, March 6. At 3 p.m., there will be a gathering at Bay View Gardens for awards and food. There will be hot dogs and hamburgers and soda all day

Phillips said there is something she could use a little more help with.

“Donations for prizes are not coming as fast as they used to, but everybody is in the same boat,” Phillips said. “We’ll still have it; that’s for sure, and all the kids will get prizes. They might only get one each this year, but they’ll also get to eat and drink all day.”

Phillips said her husband, Thomas, and daughter Jean Marie are working on a new hot dog cart for the event.

The tournament was started in 1977 by the late Steve “Tyke” Phillips, who ran it for 30 years before his death three years ago.

Those who wish to donate money or prizes should contact Elaine Phillips at 282-0034 or send donations to her at 24 By The Way, Hampton, N.Y. 12837.
