Harry Joseph Carroll, 80

 Harry Joseph Carroll, age 80 of Granville, New York passed away with his family by his side on May 18, 2011. Dad was born on September 14, 1930. He was the son of Jerry and Margaret Carroll of Granville, NY. He graduated from Granville High School in 1948. Dad served in the United States Army Signal Corps and was assigned to the 328th Communications Recon Company during the Korean Conflict.  He received the Army of Occupation Medal Germany.

Dad was a Post Commander of the VFW and member of the American Legion. He was also a past member of the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and a founding member of the Granville Rescue Squad.

Dad worked for Telescope in Granville, NY from 1948 to 1951 a lumber inspector. He attended SUNY Binghamton and earned a BA in History. He attended Harpur College in Endicott, and received his Masters degree in Social Studies.

 Dad also attended the Freedom Foundation in 1979 in Valley Forge, Saint Francis College, Loretto, Pa.

Dad taught Social Studies in the Granville Central School District for over 35 years, where he was chairman of  the History Department and taught Civil War, History, Sociology and Government. He retired in 1990.

He was also employed by the State of New York as a civilian teacher at Great Meadow Correctional Facility in Comstock.

 Dad was a Civil War history expert and he shared his love and vast knowledge of the history of the Civil War with his family and the many students he taught during his career as a school teacher. He continued to educate school children about the history of the Civil War right up until 2010.

Dad’s greatest achievement was his devoted family. He married Barbara Bogucki Carroll and was the father of five children and Papa to his nine grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara and his children: Patricia Hunt and her husband Frank of Granville, Margaret (Peggy) Little and her husband Robert of Cosayuna Lake Barbara Denis and her husband Steve of Tupper Lake, Kathleen Byrne and her husband Michael of Mendon, MA, and his son Timothy Carroll and his wife Dee Dee (Hall) of Granville. Nine grandchildren Brianna Hunt, Nicole Hunt and Gabriella (Gabby) Hunt of Granville, NY, Lauren Denis of Tupper Lake, NY, Nicholas Byrne, Michael Byrne, Jr. and Jack Byrne of Mendon, MA and Alexis (Lexi) Carroll and Brayden Carroll of Granville,. Dad is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jerry and Margaret Carroll, his sisters, Mary Veronica Field, Marguerite Bascom, Irene Norton, Winifred Smith and his brother James.

 His family will miss his wisdom, guidance, jokes and great stories. He will be forever in our hearts.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 21, at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, in Granville with the Rev. Thomas Zelker presiding. Burial will follow at Our Lake of Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Middle Granville. Friends may call on Friday, May 20, 2011 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St. Granville.
