Bring out your best looking ride Saturday, June 4 and come to Middle Granville for the kickoff car show of the region.

Push, peddle or trailer in – the fire fighters of the Penrhyn Engine and Hose Co. just want to see a field full of competitors for the judging of this annual event.

For five years the firefighters have hosted the evening auto show from 5 to 8 p.m. giving automotive enthusiasts a chance to enjoy the warm spring evening air.

The members emphasize anything – anything at all – that can be brought to the field next to the firehouse can be entered — from cars and trucks to airplanes and rickshaws. Sorry pilots, there is no landing strip available at the firehouse so you might actually have to taxi in from the airport. .

Admission will remain $3, with children under 6 free – that is if you don’t bring a non-perishable food item – in that case admission is free.

The donated food will go to the Granville Ecumenical Council’s food pantry located in the basement of St. Mary’s Church on Bulkley Avenue.

The rain date for the event will be the following day, Sunday, June 5, with times just a bit earlier, from 3 to 6 p.m.

Entering a vehicle costs $10, but those who wish may pre-register for $8 email shannondan.humphrey@gmail.com for or call 518-260-8314; plaques, provided by Sheldon Slate, will be awarded to the winners. A People’s Choice is awarded along with more than 20 other plaques.

Organizers said the response to the event has been enthusiastic since the inaugural event five years ago, car show folks like the event. People come to show off their cars, what firefighters are hoping to see is more foot traffic.

“We’re hoping to see a really good spectator turnout like what you see at Autumn Leaves in the fall,” organizer Shannon Humphrey said.

“We’ve got nice plaques we give out, good food and prizes and fun,” Humphrey said.

A food concession stand will provide carnival-style food, burgers and dogs, and sodas will be available.

Humphrey said now that the show has established itself both in the department members’ and the public’s minds the event seems to run itself and get better ever year as the turnout has remained steady and the field adjacent the firehouse full of vehicles.

The department prides itself on the “anything goes” atmosphere for entrants at the car rally.

The show has everything from stock to custom to cars that have been greatly massaged, including muscle cars and customs and everything in between, Humphrey said. Frequent contestants include the restored Mack working trucks of the Ritchie brothers.

Some of the unusual or outstanding entrants include the 1930s Bugatti racecar which showed up the first year and the Herbie the Love Bug replica which won People’s Choice two years ago.

The department will be selling food and there will be music a 50/50 drawing and ground prizes.

The car rally will be spread across the lawn next door to the fire company and out back onto the carnival grounds as well. They are located in Middle Granville off County Route 24 just south of Chapman’s General Store adjacent the firehouse.

“It’s a great way to meet your neighbors and socialize and support a really great cause at the same time,” Humphrey said.
