Flood clean-up Saturday

B y Derek Liebig

Help is on its way.

The Bay Road Presbyterian Church Neighbor to Neighbor Mission Team that met with residents coping with flooding along Lake Champlain and pledged their assistance has scheduled a work day in Whitehall this weekend.

Janice Holding, co-leader of the team said volunteers will meet near the Skenesborough Fire House at 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, June 18.

Most of their efforts will be focused on cleaning up debris from people’s yards, basements and houses.

Holding encourages volunteers to wear boots and bring along rubber work gloves and masks if they have them.

Crowbars, pry-bars, wheelbarrows, metal rakes, chainsaws, and other demolition tools may be helpful as well.

Holding and her husband, Andy are expected to be in Whitehall on Friday to further assess the damage and determine where there resources will be best utilized. They are also hoping to meet with Mayor Telisky and Supervisor Gordon to discuss the clean-up efforts.

Both the mayor and Supervisor have pledged their support in helping residents clean up debris from their properties.

Telisky said last week that residents can place any organic debris (leafs, wood, swamp grass, etc.) near the road and crews will come by and pick them up. Other garbage-plastic, metal, etc.,  will not be picked up and if materials are bagged, it is asked they be placed in a clear bag so crews can see what’s in them.

A number of local churches have pledged their support. Rev. Jim Peterson has a group willing to help, as does Rev. Jerry McKinney from the Granville Methodist Church. St. Paul’s Church in Troy has also promised to help.

And Peterson has reached out to the Granville Lions Club in search of anyone who would be willing to lend a hand.

Anyone who would like to volunteer, or needs for information is encouraged to contact Holdings at NTNMission@aol.com.
