Arrest made in latest Champman’s burglary

T wo people have been arrested following yet another break-in at Chapman’s Store in Middle Granville. This is at least the third time since March the store has been burglarized. A local man has already pleaded guilty in relation to one of the break-ins.

In the latest case, which police said took place Sept. 1, two Vermont residents have been charged, and police say the investigation is ongoing. This case involved both a burglary and the cashing of forged checks.

Police charged Philip H. Bean, 29, of West Rutland, Vt., with third-degree burglary.

His girlfriend, Crystal Mahoney, 25, of West Rutland, Vt., was charged with two felony counts of forgery for allegedly cashing two stolen checks for nearly $550 at the store, police said.

Neighbors said that while Mahoney’s home address is West Rutland, she and Bean had been living with friends near the store prior to the incident.

Mahoney was also charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, for allegedly possessing an unspecified drug.

Both were arraigned in Granville Town Court. Bean was sent to the Washington County Jail, and Mahoney was released on a promise to appear in court.
