Waterline project begins

H20 Line workA long awaited waterline project that will result in the replacement of several hundred feet of antiquated pipes got underway last week.

Riznick Construction broke ground on the project last week.

The project will replace approximately 1,000 feet of old waterline alongside Route 22 near South Bay up to the intersection of Neddo Street with 14-inch PVC pipes. A portion of the line near the intersection of Saunders and Neddo Streets will be rerouted away from two houses.

Mayor Peter Telisky said the line currently runs between two houses in that area and the location could become a serious liability if work ever needed to be done in that area. Instead the pipes will be relocated to closer to the highway.

Contractors are also expected to install a pair of fire hydrants near the northern end of the project.

The work is the second phase of a water main replacement project that was completed on Broadway in the spring and summer of 2011. That project resulted in the replacement of a water main from the area of Trinity Episcopal Church south to McDonald’s.

The project increased water pressure at the southern end of the village and the latest work is expected to do the same at the northern end of the village.

The work is expected to cost around $670,000 and will be paid for using the last remaining monies from a low-interest loan provided by Environmental Facilities Corp. a few years ago.

The project isn’t expected to cause any traffic delays but it will likely necessitate a boil-water notice when the new line is put into service.
