MVEC collecting food items at concert

A rea residents will have an opportunity to give back to their community while enjoying what it has to offer at the summer concert series tonight.

As long as the weather holds up, Harold Ford and the Cash Band will fill up Veterans Park with the sounds of a “concert dedicated to the extraordinary music of Johnny Cash,” from 7 to 9 p.m.

Aside from just enjoying the music this week, though, the Mettowee Valley Ecumenical Council is asking attendees to bring a nonperishable canned or other food item which will go to the food pantry. Locals can clear out their cupboards and give to those in need.

The idea is “to raise awareness and to help the food insecure,” said Syndy Anoe, director of the MVEC pantry. She said other towns have done similar drives, which is how her organization got the idea.

In December, the pantry reported serving more than 60 families each month, so donations are important to help those who can’t afford to buy what they need. The pantry accepts everyone from the underemployed to the elderly.

At the concert, local girl scouts will sell hot dogs, candy, baked goods, soda and water, and Stewart’s Shops will sell ice cream. There will be 50/50 tickets for sale, with proceeds helping support the concerts and other village events. Last week’s raffle garnered more than $200 for the winner.

Next week’s concert on Thursday, July 18, will feature T.S. Ensemble, which covers a range of popular songs, from 7 to 9 p.m.

“If you want to come in, then thanks for the continued support,” Anoe said.
