Pember to host book sale July 11 and 12

The books are piled high, the plants have been potted and the snacks have been baked as the Friends of the Pember Library and the Slate Valley Garden Club prepare to host the annual “Books, Buns and Bouquets” sale this Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12.
The annual book sale, which has been known to draw a sizable crowd, will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Pember Library and Museum. . A wide variety of gently used hardcover books, paperbacks, children’s books and more will be on sale. There will also be baked goods and plants for sale.
“We’re excited to be at the library for the sale. Last year was the first time and it was quite successful,” Edie Riker, secretary for the Friends, said.
She said the event is the library’s biggest fundraiser of the year, and the money raised goes to buying new equipment, such as the two computers the group recently purchased for the library.
“It’s an important fundraiser and we usually do very well. In these austere times we work to do what we can,” Riker said.
In an addition to previous sales, this year a tent will be set up on the front lawn of the Pember Library and organizers will present a table full of cookbooks.
“There are so many (cookbooks). Everyone likes something different,” Riker said.
Inside there will be books from every imaginable genre: literary classics, best sellers, fiction, non-fiction and children’s stories.
“The kids have so much fun going through the books,” Riker said.
Many of the books will cost only a quarter. Adult book prices range from 10 cents to a dollar, children’s books range from 10 cents to $1, and paperbacks are 10 cents each. Audio books, videos, tapes and DVDs are also available.
Most of the books are donated by members of the community throughout the year and Saturday’s sale augments the Friends’ weekly book sales, held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
The Slate Valley Garden Club will offer a variety of plants, including perennials, shrubs, herbs and houseplants. Some plants include donations from the 2009 Beautification Award winner Ellie Bean and the heirs of Bernice Wallman, one of the founders of the Slate Valley Garden Club 40 years ago and the person responsible for the paintings in the kids’ room at the Pember Library.
Garden club members will also sell home-made baked goods.
