Granville, NY – Peter Gilbert passed away on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at Craneville Place in Dalton, Massachusetts.

Peter was born on May 30, 1926 in Granville, New York to Steven and Mary (Hajas) Gilbert at their home on Water Street. He graduated from Granville High School in 1944 where he played football, basketball, and baseball. His passion for sports continued and he played baseball for the town league. Pete and his four brothers also teamed up to play basketball for the Knights of Columbus when they beat the Superforts (22-6) with a score of 65-49. He went on to attend the International Correspondence Schools and then worked for Decora. He eventually opened his own business in Granville, Gilbert’s Newsroom. His family has many fond memories of stopping in to see him, have a chat, share a story and a laugh. The children especially liked the free candy he would slip to them while the adults were busy. He married Hazel Jones and spent many happy years with her and her children living in both Granville and Argyle. He was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Granville, NY.

He is predeceased by his wife Hazel Gilbert; siblings, Mary Doty, Steven Gilbert, Anne DiCicco, Ella Geruntino, Sue Sipowicz, Mike “Miak” Gilbert, and George Gilbert; and stepsons Timothy Carta and Ralph Carta.

He is survived by his sister, Frances Sweet of Granville, NY; brother Joseph Gilbert of Ocean Grove, NJ; and brother John Gilbert of Millerton, NY; stepchildren Tina Bromley and Pam Bernard and grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 9:45 AM at STs Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, 2 Park Ave., Granville, NY with Rev. Robert Hospodar. Burial will follow at STs Peter and Paul Cemetery, Middle Granville. Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, NY.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, NY.
