Granville’s field hockey team may have come out on the wrong end of a 3-2 overtime thriller versus Corinth on Monday, but head coach Katie Barber said it felt like a win.
“I’m super proud of the way the girls played. It was a huge improvement over out last game,” Barber said. “They played with heart and you can’t coach that.”
Granville and Corinth held one another scoreless through regulation and the first two overtime periods before Corinth’s Lindsey Holcomb knocked in the game winning goal in one-on-one breakaways.
Taylor Scribner and Bri Kelly both scored goals in breakaways for Granville.
Cheyenne Oakman, making her first varsity start, held Corinth scoreless through regulation and the first two overtime periods, recording 18 saves in the game.
“She more than held her own,” assistant coach Carol Scott said. “She did a great job.”
Barber also lauded the play of Jessica Roberts who made several game saving saves on the defensive end, knocking would be goals away from the net.
“She’s our only senior on defense. All the other girls on defense are sophomores. She’s our leader and coach back there. They all did so well,” Barber said.
Scott said despite the final result, it’s a game the team can build upon.
“I think a light bulb came on tonight. I think the girls realized how good they can be,” Scott said.
On Sept. 12 Granville was held scoreless in a 2-0 loss to visiting North Warren.
Granville had plenty of opportunities to score with 11 penalty corners but managed only four shots on goal.
Amanda Braynack and Sydney Gagnon both scored for North Warren.
Hannah Bassett had eight saves for Granville.
The Horde falls to 0-3 in the league and 1-3 overall.
The team will travel to Schuylerville tomorrow where it will face rival and defending Wasaren League champion Hoosick Falls at 2 p.m.
