DeLorme’s 199 paces rifle club

Young Joe DeLorme has a career night, shooting a near perfect 199, including a 50 in the difficult standing position.

DeLorme led all shooters in Whitehall’s 976-968 win over visiting Hartford last Thursday. After cleaning prone and sitting, Joe shot a wide nine on his first kneeling shot for his only slip up of the day. The high school junior ended up with nine solid tens, doing it against some of the best of the best.

Hartford was led by Ed Stewart’s 198. Stewart, the son of former Whitehaller Mary “Lane” Stewart, has gotten 2015 off to a strong start, averaging an outstanding 198.33. There is a lot of shooting left to do, but Stewart has the early lead for being the top gun in the Tri-County Rifle League.

John Hollister is no stranger to being top gun, having had the title more than any other shooter in the history of the league. Hollister shot a 197 in this match to take the second spot on the Whitehall team.

Whitehall has never lost a match on its Hollister Road Range, but this match was certainly no “gimme.” Hartford has some good shooters. Whitehall is missing some very good shooters this season and on this night, some of the better shooters were a bit off the mark, but luckily for Whitehall, so were some of Hartford’s.

On the Hartford team, Jay Lawrence, a high school freshman, shot 191 to edge his father for fourth on the team. Jay is a member of the Whitehall Junior Shooting Program.

Whitehall will be home again this week to shoot against Fort Edward.
