Horde competitive in loss to Tamarac

Coming off one of its worst losses of the season, the Granville girls basketball team played one of its best DSC_0241games of the season Friday night in a loss to Tamarac.

The Horde reached double-digit scoring in three of four quarters and played with a renewed sense of enthusiasm in the 72-47 loss.

“I’m very proud of them. That was a state finalist last year. I’m happy with how we played. We’re improving,” coach Bob Schoonmaker said.

Emily Erickson scored a game-high 25 points for Tamarac. Alexis Smith led Granville with 15 points and 5 steals and Bri Ettori was a presence on the inside, scoring 10 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots. Christine Catalan and Gabby Hunt each scored eight points.

The 47-point effort was one of Granville’s best all season and came only a few days after the team suffered a 76-28 loss to Greenwich.

In that game, the Witches scored 30 points in the first quarter and led 44-4 at halftime.

Alexis Case, who is among the top scorers in Section II, scored a game-high 29 points.

Hunt, Smith and Catalan each scored seven points for Granville.

Granville played better in the second half, scoring 15 points in the third quarter and nine points in the fourth quarter.

Granville (0-7, 2-7) will travel to Mechanicville tomorrow for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
