Golden Horde upended by Broadalbin-Perth

In the end Broadalbin-Perth was just too much for Granville.

The Patriots upended Granville 67-44 Tuesday night in the opening round of the Section II, Class B Basketballplayoffs.

Broadalbin-Perth outscored Granville in all four quarters, including a big second quarter, to end the Horde’s season.

Matt Fuller scored a team-high 18 points and Jacob Young, playing in his final varsity game, chipped in with 10 points.

Ryan Dingman scored a game-high 22 points for the Patriots.

Granville played well early, trailing by only two points after the first quarter, but the Patriots outscored the Horde 20-8 in the second quarter and entered the half with a 14-point lead.

Granville kept the score within reach in the second half but had problems making the outside shot, the team’s bread and butter. As a team, Granville made only one 3-pointer in the game.

Granville advanced to face Broadalbin Perth after knocking off 15th seeded Coxsackie-Athens last Friday.

The Horde built a large lead in the middle quarters and withstood an offensive flurry by the Indians in the fourth quarter to win 56-52.

Matt Fuller led Granville with 18 points and Jacob Young scored 16 points and made all four of Granville’s 3-pointers.

Both teams played strong defense in the first quarter as Coxsackie Athens built a 9-6 lead after eight minutes of play.

Granville continued to play stifling defense in the second quarter holding the Indians to only five points and entered the half with a 17-14 lead.

The Golden Horde’s offense began to find its rhythm in the third quarter as Granville scored 19 points.

The momentum carried over into the fourth quarter as Granville scored 20 points and it needed nearly all of them.

The Indians tried to mount a comeback and hit several outside shots to cut into Granville’s lead, but the Horde held for the win.

The victory was Granville’s third in as many games.

Last Tuesday, Granville defeated a North Warren team that was 14-4 on the season and the second seeded team in the Class D playoffs.

The Cougars looked the part of a high seed in the early going, opening the game on an 11-0 run, but it was all Granville from there as they went on to a 60-48 win.

Young and Fuller each scored 21 points and as a team Granville made 19 of its 20 free throws.

Morgan Williams held Nick Sapienza, the Cougars’ leading scorer, to 17 points.

After falling behind early, Granville finished the first quarter on a 10-0 run and entered the second quarter trailing by only a single point.

North Warren cut into Granville’s lead with a 16-point third quarter but the Horde finished the game strong, outscoring the Cougars by 11 points in the final quarter.

Granville finishes the season with an 8-13 record, including four wins in its last six games.
