Solomon Northup reenactor in Salem

The Salem Courthouse Community Center, 25 East Broadway, continues its March Civil War series at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 12, as guest speaker Clifford Oliver presents a first-person narrative on Solomon Northup, as portrayed in the recent film “12 Years a Slave.”

A professional photographer who is interested in reenactors of historic figures, Oliver developed an interest in Solomon Northup through his involvement with the Board of the Greenwich Library. After being asked to give a presentation on Northup as part of a Black History program, he continued his research into Northup’s story and now has a special costume for his portrayal.

Clifford Oliver has also presented programs in schools and museums using the New York Learning Standards gleaned from the Lincoln Center Artist-in-Residency program.

His entertaining talk will be presented in at the CCC in the first floor Archive Room, which is handicap-accessible. There is no admission charge by donations are appreciated. To reserve a seat, call 518-854-7053.
