Baseball downed by league foes

Wasaren League play has not been kind to Granville’s baseball team in the early part of the season.

The Horde lost its first four league games of the season.

Granville opened the Wasaren League slate last Tuesday against Greenwich and were never able to overcome an early deficit in the 13-4 loss.

The Witches, who are expected to be among the league’s best teams, scored 10 runs in the first four innings, including three in the first, three in the second and four in the fourth.

Quinn McCormick had three hits and scored four runs for Greenwich and Jim Brophy finished 4 for 4.
Cole McCullen had two of Granville’s six hits, stroking a double and a single.

After falling behind 3-0, Granville scored twice in the second half of the inning to cut Greenwich’s lead to one run. The Witches, however, scored three more times in the bottom half of the frame and Lukas Whitehouse held Granville to only two more runs the rest of the way.

The following day Granville struggled to mount any offense in an 11-2 loss to Tamarac.

Tony Shufon held Granville scoreless through the first six innings and had four hits in helping lead the Bengals to the win.

Jake Young had two hits for Granville.

Matt Fuller did a good job of keeping the Bengals off the scoreboard through the first two innings, but Tamarac scored six times in the third inning and added another three runs in the fourth inning. Granville committed a few errors in the third inning that led to Tamarac’s big inning.

Granville scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning but were unable to get any closer.

On Friday, Granville’s offense once again struggled to score in a 5-1 loss to Mechanicville.

Curtis Tironi struck out nine batters in the complete game victory.

Ronnie Taylor had a nice game for Granville, holding Mechanicville to only four hits, but was hurt by two fielding errors. He also picked up a pair of hits at the dish.

The Red Raiders did all their damage early, scoring a run in the first inning and adding four more in the second inning.

Granville scratched a run across in the fourth inning, but couldn’t get anything else going.

On Monday, Granville was strong in the early innings but couldn’t hold off Hoosic Valley in a 15-4 loss.

Granville scored two run in each of the first two innings, but were held scoreless the rest of the way.

Hoosic Valley on the other hand scored nine run in the third and fourth innings to take an insurmountable 10-4 lead after four innings. The Indians recorded 22 hits in the game.
