Car rally to boast more than just cars

According to organizers of the Penrhyn Engine Co. Car Rally in Middle Granville, they’ve seen it all over the years.

Patrick Loomis, the event chairman, said that all kinds of vehicles have come to the rally and there are no restrictions on what can be entered.

“We’ll take whatever people want to show,” Loomis said.

Any motorcycle, tractor, truck, rickshaw, airplane or anything else can enter the show as long as they pay the fee.

The event is Saturday, June 6, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Middle Granville Carnival Grounds on County Rte. 24, next to the fire station. Rain date is June 7 from 3 to 6 p.m.

“One year we had a little plane, it was really, really cool,” said Loomis, who added there have also been semi-trucks entered in the rally.

Loomis said the event is a big hit and that an average of 75 to 80 cars enter the show each year.

A nice thing about the event, Loomis said, are the activities going on such as a 50/50 raffle, a DJ who plays music, and food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and chips. And, he said, a lot of the people who go know each other.

Loomis took over organizing the event from his grandfather, the original organizer.

“He wanted to do something he enjoyed and would benefit the fire department,” Loomis said.

Plaques will be awarded for the top 25 vehicles as voted on by people who enter the vehicles, and a people’s choice award will be given to one vehicle chosen by spectators.

Admission is $3, children under 6 get in for free. The entry fee, $8 ahead of the event and $10 on event day, and the event benefits Penrhyn.

Prizes to be given out include two Telescope Casual Furniture folding chairs, a goody bag from Curtis Lumber and more.

“We’ve had a good turnout every year,” Loomis said.
