For the 87 students graduating from Granville Junior-Senior High School, a journey that began 12 years ago concludes tomorrow night.
Weather permitting, the graduation ceremony will take place on the school’s front lawn at 6:30 p.m.
The ceremony will begin with remarks by school superintendent Mark Bessen, along with Board of Education president Eric Scribner and Camille Harrelson, the school’s principal.
Class valedictorian Hannah Jones and salutatorian Jake Young will then address the crowd and their fellow classmates.
“I love hearing the speeches they give,” Harrelson said. “It’s kind of the last address they give to their fellow classmates.”
Harrelson said Jones and Young are “two outstanding students, who have brought so much to our school,” not just because of their academic achievements but also their abilities as athletes and musicians, along with their community service.
Harrelson said it is going to be sad watching the class graduate, adding it always is, and she complimented other students in the graduating class as well.
“As I look about the other students in the class, it’s amazing what they’ve accomplished,” Harrelson said, noting that students in this class came up with and made “spirit night” possible.
Crystal Everdyke, the school’s music teacher, will lead the school band’s performance at the ceremony.
“It’s just awe-inspiring,” Harrelson said about having the ceremony outside and watching the sunset.
There is also a Baccalaureate ceremony today at 7 p.m. at Granville Methodist Church. The non-denominational service will be led by the Rev. Jerry McKinney, Harrelson said.
She said that McKinney does a nice job and the ceremony is a way of reminding the students that they are and will be Granville students.
