Granville residents are cleaning out their garages and pruning their lawns in preparation for this weekend’s town-wide garage sale, an annual event that draws hundreds of bargain hunters to the village.
For Shelley Fairbanks, who lives in Middle Granville, it’s difficult to get shoppers to venture to sales outside the village. That’s why Fairbanks decided to donate her unwanted items to the Granville United Methodist Church’s “Treasure Sale.”
“This year I’m donating a bicycle … games, books, jewelry and any gently used items that I’ve outgrown,” Fairbanks said. “I have no use for these items and just want to see them go to someone who will enjoy them … plus it helps out the church, which is also great.”
Fairbanks and her family, members of the church, have donated items to the annual sale for a few years.
“A lot of people forget about the church sale,” Fairbanks said. “… but there are a lot of cheap, quality items up for grab.”
The church’s “Treasure Sale” starts at 9 a.m. at the church parish house at 18 Church St. All of the proceeds go toward the ministries of the church and help to support church events including its weekly soup and sandwich lunches, which it serves free to the community. The church is also hosting a breakfast Saturday morning.
“Money is always a need,” said Rev. Jerry McKinney. “It helps support us financially and it’s good to see the fellowship of people working together.”
Town-wide sales run Saturday, May 14 and Sunday, May 15.
Businesses wishing to set up in front of the High School on Quaker Street should contact Bob Jones of Granville Rotary at 518-291-7537 to secure a spot. For better exposure, town residents may set up in Veteran’s Park.
