Organizers are hoping it will be the event of the summer.
The Whitehall High School All-Class Reunion is set for this weekend and some 500 alumni of varying ages are expected to pour into the Birthplace of the U.S. Navy for the festivities.
“The organizing committee is very excited about the entire event,” said Mike Rocque, an event organizers.
The event will kick off with some live music in the town’s Skenesborough Harbor Park on Friday evening, weather permitting. The music will go from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the amphitheater.
“We’ve got an excess of 200 people who said they would attend a concert in the park,” Rocque said, adding that many have plans at the American Legion, Elks Lodge or Big G’s Pub afterward.
The Whitehall Concert in the Park Series took this week off to allow the focus to fall on the All-Class Reunion.
Saturday morning gets underway with a golf tournament at Skene Valley Country Club. The tournament will have a shotgun start at 8 a.m. There are still foursomes available and anyone interested in participating in the tournament should call Skene Valley Country Club at 499-1685.
Proceeds from the tournament will go to the Whitehall Youth League, Rocque said.
Many local businesses will be open for breakfast, including Historic Ground Coffee Shop and Rathbun’s Maple Sugar House.
At 10 a.m. the event’s focal point will shift to Whitehall High School.
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. members of the Honor Society at Whitehall High School will give tours to any and all alumni interested.
A quilt show will take place in Whitehall High School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2 and a food item to be donated to the food pantry. Proceeds will benefit the Whitehall National Honor Society.
Those participating in the show will display their quilts, wall hangings, wearable art and a variety of other fabrics.
“There’s always history and a story to a quilt,” said Jean Mead, one of the organizers of the quilt show. “In the quilting community we like to show off.”
At 4 p.m. a service will be held at Our Lady of Hope Church, honoring all Whitehall High School alumni, living and deceased.
Following at 4:30 p.m., the main event gets underway at the Whitehall Athletic Club. At that point, a schedule of the day’s events will be available and prepaid t-shirts and sweatshirts will also be available. Excess shirts will also be available for purchase.
Hot and cold hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be several bars inside the Athletic Club. Paul Ferguson will DJ the festivities at the club.
Rocque said there will be seating for about 240 people outside and 300 inside.
There will also be raffles at the main event.
Sunday morning, the United Methodist Church will host a service at 10:30 a.m. and refreshments will be available afterward. Our Lady of Hope Church will also host a service at 11 a.m.
Rocque said when the event is over, the list of alumni will be used to create a “Whitehall Alumni Association.”
