After an abrupt shutdown last year, Scotties’ is ready to reopen – under new ownership.
Complete with a new breakfast bar, penny candy display, updated menu and main-floor bathroom, the restaurant and convenience store on Granville’s Main Street will host a grand opening Wednesday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Mayor Bryan LaRose and other village and town officials will join new owners Mark and Edie Pickard at the opening. There will be a formal ribbon cutting at 9 a.m.
“We’re pretty excited,” said Edie Pickard, thanking her close friends who have helped with the renovation.
The Pickards said they are ready for the crowds to come in.
“Everything’s ready to go,” Pickard said.
A new feature that’s been added is pre-made cakes, pies and pastries, along with breakfast sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers and salads for on-the-go customers.
“We want to make sure that we have enough for people that are on-the-run, because a lot of people are in a hurry,” Pickard said.
Popular items including milk, butter and eggs will be sold as well.
The menu includes breakfast items from specialty omelets to homemade muffins and French toast. For lunch and dinner, items including BLTs, chef salads, thanksgiving sandwiches, cheeseburgers and shrimp baskets will be available.
A special kids’ menu for children 12 and under features grilled cheese, bologna sandwiches, hot dogs and chicken strips.
There will also be daily Scotties’ Smiley Specials written on a board in the restaurant. Opening day specials will likely include homemade mac n’ cheese and lasagna rolls, minestrone soup and clam chowder, said cook Jim Donaldson.
Also new to the menu: “We’ve got some special foods and drinks that nobody else in Granville carries,” Pickard said. She said specialty vendors have provided Scotties’ with foods and drinks for samples to test out in the Granville market.
All food will be made fresh, Pickard said. She expects the first food delivery later this week.
“We don’t want that too early because we want the food to be fresh,” she said.
Fridays will be seafood night at Scotties’. Seafood casserole, clam chowder and Haddock fish fry will be served.
The health department this week gave Scotties’ the green light to open. It also recently got the OK to install a bathroom upstairs. Washroom construction should be complete by the end of the week.
Scotties’ is still waiting on its liquor license from the state.
“We are not sure if we will have that when we open,” Edie Pickard said. “I apologize to the community if we don’t have it right away, but it’s coming.”
Pickard said if Scotties’ doesn’t carry a particular item that its customers are looking for, she’ll be more than happy to look into stocking it.
“Let us know. We will try to get it in,” she said. “We are here for the community…whatever they need.”
Scotties will be open seven days a week, starting Wednesday, Sept. 21. It’ll open at 4:30 a.m. daily. On weekdays, the diner will close at 6 p.m. and the store will close at 7 p.m. Store hours are extended until 8 p.m. on the weekends.
