The 22nd annual car show is trying something new and might have a rain date for what would be the first time. Organizers are making plans and closely watching the weather to try to see what would work best.
An earlier Sentinel mentioned the alternate date as
Oct. 5
but no decision has been made as of 2:23 p.m. on Friday. I will try to shoot an update out when I hear something, but that call is not expected to be made until Saturday.
That means the final time to get Granville Engine and Hose chicken until next year hangs in the balance. Have the chickens been ordered? will there be no-matter-what cooking? Stay tuned fearless reader.
And if it is made around 1 p.m., I'll be standing in whatever rain is pouring down in Mechanicville.
Word I'm hearing and looking to confirm is that the Haunted House in Hampton, put on by their FD, will cease to exist. The FD gave/sold thier equipment to the Corinth FD who must be thinking about starting one up because I don't remember them having one. Sounds like another one bites the dust due to manpower and manning issues. Too bad. I heard that was a good one.
Good to see the boy soccer team break through for a win. They've been on the verge of breaking through for a while.
football
You definitely need to do more than want it bad. Although Granville continues to improve, it just might be that no amount of improvement could have brought them even with Schuylerville. Nothing against this Horde team, they never quit and like Coach Torres wants I think there was plenty of icing going on back in Schuylerville afterwards, but they were a flat out good team.
I have to admit to not knowing much about Mech., I think the last time I saw them play I was on the other side of the football. I like the Horde chances, they challenged Cambridge, but I, like many Horde fans, see that as one game that got away. Could be a tough one both ways if the projected rain, only 40 percent chance at this point, pans out it'll come down to running games and I like Granville in that case.
A big start becomes key for the team. Get on the scoreboard early and give up no easy scores which might become a tall order in the wet. I see 22-16 when I look into my crystal ball and Granville gets to 2-2.
field hockey
Any fans/parents/players out there? Looking at the 'Lady Horde' painted on the field. Do the players like that? Or is it considered sexist or an I reading too much into this? Opinions anyone?
Anywho...the team looked good and were back to thier dominant ways Tues. vs. Schuylerville with a 3-0 shutout. Taryn Little's 7th to lead area stoppers on only 3 shots - that's Horde hockey. The team has a funky kind of schedule that was front loaded with non-leaguers and finishes with league matches that will matter. lots of pressure, but that good kind that gets players ready for cool nights on the turf in Saratoga Springs.
responses
More and more some people are beginning to respond, that's good. Someone looks at this thing. I try to keep up with it as much as I can.
Thanks go out to Ardyce Bresette for suggesting this week's question of the week. I think it's one I'll keep going back to. Not much of a suprise that kids aren't too interested in the ancestry. I think you have to be a little closer to being an ancestor to care about finding out about them. Although I would have to confess to knowing next to nothing about my family tree.
I've also had a few weird postings that looked like straight code. If you posted and did not see the reply that might have been it. Several postings all about the same time, identical to each other and appeared to contain links - something fishy.
Recently another reader suggestion came in via email (sentinelreporter@manchesternewspapers.com). Another good one, please, keep them coming. It’s great to hear from people, even if they’re not replying directly to the blog.
Here it is:
Have you checked out the long range weather forecast from the “Old Farmer's Almanac” for our area? How believable do you think this forecast is?
tough test
Football rankings just came out and it is not good news for the Horde. Playing Schuylerville rarly is but now it's '11th in the state'
This could be a big mental hurdle for the team COULD...
They didn't seem to be intimidated by the Cambridge team last weekend
With a positive outlook and who knows? That's why they play the games and all that. Granville improved over week one and racked up an impressive 30 points against a typically strong defensive team. Corinth held Schuylerville scoreless for a half, but Hoosick Falls, who looked so strong in week one, couldn't stop them.
The head coach has talked about it before, mistake-free football, and the team reduced the number of mistakes week one to week two - can week 3 be the game they break through? This has to be a low scoring game, the D will win this one. NO easy scores for them and cash in any and every oppurtunity for Granville. This is not out of reach for this team, but will be an extreme test of their patience, skill and will to win.
Here's a litttle something that got left out of this week's coverage for space reasons. This section talks about the 3rd down play where Cambridge appeared to snap the ball before they should have been able to. Afterwards, although not happy head coach Mario Torres was a professional, as always, and clmly assessed the situtation. I have to confess to not knowing the rules well enought to say for sure, but the bottom line looks to be that it was a tough break for the Horde.
'Torres declined to say what was said in a post-game conference with game officials, but fans waiting for the team at the fence speculated it had something to do with a controversial play from late in the fourth quarter. “I can’t comment on that,” he said. With a Cambridge drive on life support, Granville appeared to have a stop with a third and long facing the Indians. Granville called a time out to prepare to put the offense back on the field trailing by just five points after scoring twice on extended drives. Cambridge appeared to have been allowed to snap the ball and start the play before the Granville defense was in position and the converted the first down and scored one play later.
“The referees have to give you 15 seconds for the ball to be ready to play, the side judge gave us our 15 seconds. I thought we had our kids on the field and ready in time, the referees didn’t and the offense does not have to wait for the defense to be ready. That was the explanation they gave us. I think we’re on the field and we’re ready. It is one thing that is what it is. We don’t make mistakes early in the football game and that play means absolutely nothing,” Torres said. “They scored two touchdowns on blown coverages and missed assignments, so now instead of 35-30 it’s 30-18 or 30-19, then that first down doesn’t make a bit of difference,” Torres said. “We play mistake free football in the first half and we’re not even in that situation to worry about it,” Torres said.
I haven't talked to the coaches since they looked at video, but that assessment looks like a good one. Dwelling on that call can't help the Horde with the next contest or the one after that. Judging from the improvement week 1 to week 2 I look for Granville to give the Black Horses a run for their money. If Granville can sure-up that pass D they can make it a long night for the Schuylerville offense. I'll bet the coaches want to see how C-town did it in the first half of the opening weekend.
New things to do list...
The Big Bart is going down the same day as Autumn Leaves. Unfortunate. I have a new driver AND a new camera...decisions, decisions.
They'll be cooking up chili in Poultney the 27th. That has been a good time each time I've been and I hope to get over there again. Fun stuff and a great way to spend a fall day if the weather cooperates.
Let's see, what else? Still looking for questions of the week. I got one from Ardyce at the library. She emailed it to me so it doesn't appear in here. Anyone reading this can submit a question or submit somebody else's.
What's the worst that could happen? It gets in the paper? Give it a shot.
Two of Granville's sports teams face or have faced a big tests this week. Field hockey took on Hoosick Falls and prevailed 2-1. A good game by reports I have heard. More first time scorers, Chelsea Young, and Mary Beth Somich added another goal and an assist to her season tallies. The Lady Horde only have 3 (no Salem is league so 4) more league contest for the rest of the month, but have faced substantial competition.
I saw that North Warren beat Schuylerville yesterday 2-0 and Granville already beat NW pretty handily here, 1-0. Anything can happen in a long season, but there are able hand on the wheel of the Horde field hockey bus. I'm looking for it to continue to cruise.
Field hockey's real challenge remains playing their own game and not buying into the hype and then slacking off. This isn't a team with slack in their vocab books, but the time for let up is when you're cradling hardware at Skidmore - or beyond.
On the football field Granville faces a real test against league power CAmbridge Saturday. Get down there and show 'em your support fans - CARPOOL - and why don't people tailgate for high school games? Does anyone out there do that?
Off the subject.
Granville looked good thier first week out of the gate. Not unstoppable or without some things to fix but solid and strong. There were a few hits on the field last week where the Horde hitters were really bringing the wood. High school sports are notoriously hard to predict, but you heard it here first - Granville can win at Cambridge.
Keys: don't limit penalties, E-liminate them; score first and make the indians play from behind for a change and continue to work hard. Granville showed me real poise last week when down but not out. There was no panic or quit on the bench and certainly not on the field.
They kept grinding. A grinder on the poker tables keeps his swings up and down under control and wins without it being flashy or streaky. That's what the Horde need to do to pull off the upset special.
After an 0-fer-gosh-sakes season last year they are going to get overlooked by some of the better teams, they can use that as camoflage; being underrated can be an advantage. It is all on Granville Cambridge expects and are expected to win Saturday a controlling effort by Granville could shock the world - to coin a phrase.
It should be a heck of a show at Cambridge this Saturday. I know I'm looking forward to it. After knocking off Stillwater the Horde have a true challange in Cambridge especially coming off a week one loss to Hoosick Falls.
I heard the coach sandbagged the PS reporter in the preview, not letting on that they have a real powderkeg down in the valley, but that is looking too far ahead. Facing the Indians' program on the road will be a real test for this team. I liked what I saw Sat. - no panic, no heads down in short no quit in the team as a whole.
The penalties have to stop. I've never seen so many delay calls in high school ball but they did go both ways; holding happens but also negates big gains at times. I was impressed with the resolve Granville showed and the outright toughness. The coaches are clearly keeping on top of the little things -cramps happen, but are preventable and hydration has to go hand in hand with conditioning. good stuff lokking forward to more and some sunshine would be nice.
Field hockey
The team continues to march. You can't call it 'cruise' because they're clearly working hard for everything they get, but this is an exciting team that if it is possible looks even faster than last year's squad with great ball handling and exceptional goal tending. Crazy numbers are being thrown around for T. Little and shutouts, but with that team in front of her - it's hard to say. When C-town came calling Tues. an aggressive Little was out of the goal a few time booting that hard orange ball half way down the field before the Tomahawks got a chance to shoot. She faced a grand total of 1 shot and no penalty corners.
The offense maintains pressure on a team until they eventually fold. When A. Straub notched that first goal a dam burst and the goals continued to flow like water from a a punctured pool liner. If half of the near misses went in goal the other night - whew - blow out. but then again, four tallies in one half is a lot of offense.
Volleyball
The - what nickname do volleyball players have? Any? Basketball players are sometimes refferred to as 'cagers' etc.
Off the subject...
Granville's home opener is tonight against Tamarac
Panthers
I might have mentioned this here before. I get asked once in a while why we don't cover the Panther games and I make the same offer: send something and we'll try to get it in. I've mentioned this to several parents and coaches with no results. It's not that we don't want to or wouldn't put something in but its just to much for one person covering all of the HS sports and then regular news.
I've been coming up with the questions for question of the week for some time now and wonder if there is something out there that I haven't asked. It's a family paper, I'll throw that out there so if you're picking up what I'm putting down you'll know to
keep it clean.
Otherwise, anything goes...But...and it's a big one: it has to be a question people would answer. Something, for example, that is extremely politically charged might not fly. Give it a shot, who knows, maybe you'll come up with THE question?
It has to be something people will know about - so no quantum pysics questions, at least not the hard ones. I haven't asked a lot of political questions beacuse people tend to shy away from answering those. Just a though, fire in a question. Maybe next week I'll put a list of choices out there or if I have enough, let people pick the winner from the submissions.....maybe.
I'm getting some responses which is nice to know somebody is out there. Hello to all my posters.
Two contests last night where I don't know how the athletes did it. Field hockey and boy soccer battled opponents and the opprossive heat and humidity.
Soccer ran like crazy but couldn't get past Berlin. They, I believe, are one of those smaller schools that only hosts one male and one female fall sport - NOT 100 % sure on that one. It certainly seems like an asset to that chosen sport when all of the school's athletes are funneled into one program. Looked to be a pretty good club, Granville fought hard, like Coach Jordan said the guys will play hard, but they couldn't bridge the gap.
Somebody drew a card in the first half, not sure who it before I got there, but on a similar play in the second Granville didn't get the call.
Field hockey ran like mad Wednesday leaving it all on the field and a little splattered here and there. An absolutley heroic effort from the - do they prefer Lady Horde? I'll have to ask. Players were coming to the side lines, unable to talk and collasping into a pile only to hop back up after a short break. Just incredible the endurance the entire club showed - hats off to coaches Nolan, Palmer and Usher for getting those guys whipped into shape, it paid off in the 3-2 strokes win.
It was unreasonably hot. Just standing on the sidelines I was wringing wet and quickly out of bottled water. It seems like September and August got swapped around weather-wise. I'm sure the football team would like to see something a little more seasonable Saturday when they face off with the Stillwater Warriors.
Stillwater returns some skill players so this will be huge test for the Horde. Good luck to them.
Questions?? of the week variety
I've been coming up with the questions for question of the week for a few years now and wonder if there is something out there that I haven't asked that you folks would want to see. It's a family paper, I'll throw that out there so if you're picking up what I'm putting down you'll know to

Just one response thus far from Artice Brisette down at the Pember. her question was about famous or infamous relatives. I like it. If there are more out there, get them in one way or another.
We have a little mailbox out in front or email us something.
If it has to be fall already, at least there are sports....
It has been a nice start to the sports season for both the field hockey and golf teams.
Each team has two wins thus far,
field hockey
with a Johnstown Moose tourney win under its belt over the past weekend and the defeat of two pretty good teams from larger schools ( schen and johnstown). The trend in the past few years had been to split the tourney and win one, lose the other. Picking up where they left off last year? Just maybe. More to come on this one, surely….
The golf team
haspicked up its first two wins in several years already this season after dropping thier opener. Second year head coach Mark Valentine said he was not sure, but had players telling him they might be the first wins in five years for the program. Coach said he had a good feeling about the season, but was wary of some of the powerhouse teams out there.
Today is the first day of high school sports officially, get out there and show your community and school spirit. If you don't play, go and watch. If you could play, consider it. not everyone who plays in high school is an all-star. I know I wasn't. But go cheer 'em on regardless.
Speaking of "Em"
I'm hearing about a poker tourney coming up in Poultney for the Whitehall Elks. Two tournaments. Sounds exciting. More to come on alla dis'....
It’s a bit of a trip, but if you’re in Hudson Falls and you want a nice canoe or kayak trip I suggest you check out the feeder canal also known as the barge canal to some. I happened across it mostly by accident while exploring part of the Hudson River with my father this weekend.
It begins in what I think is West Glens Falls on that side of the Hudson River on
Richardson Street near Haviland Cove, the headwaters, and finishes near Martindale Avenue in Hudson Falls.
I suggest you find Martindale and paddle upstream against the current.
I think it’s seven miles from end to end so if you work your way upstream you can pretty much drift back to your car.
A small parking lot stands in back of the Martindale put in, which has docks and shallow waters for an easy entry into the water for canoe or kayak.
The current on the day we went required effort but not struggle and the five miles upstream went by quickly.
Paddlers have two options with getting out short of the end to move over the bank into the Hudson River or continue to the park at the end.
We went from upstream to down and back up, the hard way, but still had fun.
In parts you paddle behind homes while down in a cement trench and in other sections you travel under buildings.
Yep – under.
In the Finch Pruyn paper company area, near the Glens Falls Civic Center, paddlers will travel within feet of an active paper mill and all of the sights and smells of that operation and in one area you drift right under a building for about 50 feet.
Neat.
In one other spot you have to look for a keyway designed into a frame around a pipe running across the canal. Unless the water is running very high you can get under the pipe anyway, but this is the safest spot.
You’ll spot lots of little fish jumping out of the water and the bike path runs along most of the canal so as you paddle, suddenly, from out of nowhere will be people walking or riding right next to you.
The water depth varies between a few inches and a few feet and can make things a little tough on kayakers who want to get out and stretch their legs.
The few docks along the canal are pretty high and better suited to canoes, except at the ends, so plan to paddle through one way before you break – it’s not that far and goes quickly. This is a unique way to see part of the city that some people don’t even realize are there
