An evening of classical music will be performed on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 4 p.m., at the Fort Salem Theater, 11 East Broadway in Salem.

“Music from Salem” collaborates with the Fort Salem Theater for the first time, performing in an intimate, originally sacred, briefly military, many times burned and rebuilt and now unabashedly enthusiastically artistic space.

Evocative, short solos for cello and viola will draw theatergoers into a deep inner space. Ravel’s joyous sonata for violin and cello, a rhythmic romp full of harmonics and pizzicati, Boccherini  and more will be performed.

Caroline Shaw’s “In Manus Tuas,” inspired by hearing Thomas Tallis sun in Christ Church, New Haven, reaches for a mysterious, elusive moment, with arpeggiated harmony fragments hanging and disappearing into thin air. “A Prelude” and “Sarabande” by John Harbison, singing and searching as only a solo cello can.

Led by acclaimed artistic director Lila Brown, “Music from Salem” invites audiences to be immersed in the timeless beauty of chamber music.

The concert will offer a journey through classical compositions ranging from the 18th century to contemporary works, from Bach to Harbison and beyond.

Performers will include Saul Bitran on violin, Lila Brown on viola, and Jonathan Brin on cello.

Tickets priced at $30 are available through the Fort Salem Theater’s box office. Music from Salem also offers a pay-what-you-can policy.

The group will also offer a free winter open rehearsal on Friday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m., at the Brown Farm’s heated studio, located at 154 Priest Road in Salem.

Join music high school students form the Cambridge Central School, headed by their music teacher, Darrell Holovach, at this new and cozy event of chamber music. All are welcome.
