Anthony L. “Tony” Cioffi

Anthony L. Cioffi passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center.

Tony was born on April 5, 1937, in Rutland, the son of the late Dominic and Rose (Belfore) Cioffi.

Tony was a 1956 graduate of Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Rutland. Tony worked at Vermont Marble in Proctor, Vt., for 32 years, and then went to work at Carris Reels in Rutland. He was a longtime caretaker of the Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland and also had his own lawn-care business. Most recently Pep did the caretaker work at the Senior Center in Granville, N.Y. Those who knew Pep will remember him as a real “talker.” He always had time to chat. He will be remembered by patrons of Scotties, Stewart’s and the Pine Grove for making his “at least” once- a-day rounds to visit with his friends.

Pep always looked forward to the summer and going to various carnivals and fairs throughout the area. As the summer drew to a close he anticipated parking cars at the Rutland Fairgrounds, another great opportunity to catch up and chat with old friends. Tony was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1122 in Rutland.

Survivors are his wife of 23 years, Dawn M. (Martelle) Cioffi. He and Dawn were married in the Proctor Union Church on Aug. 7, 1985. Tony is survived by his sons, Mark Cioffi of Rutland, and Kevin and Christopher “CJ” Dunbar, both of Wells, Vt.; and his daughters, Charlene Cioffi-Cheney of Rutland, Robin Chadburn of North Clarendon, Vt., Karen Sarnowski of Rutland and Laurie Martindale of Hampton, N.Y. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. In addition he is survived by a special cousin, Steve Canney of Rutland.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, June 20, at the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville, N.Y., with the Rev. Thomas Zelker presiding. Burial followed in the Wells Cemetery. Calling hours were held Saturday. A family gathering took place at Laurie Martindale’s home in Hampton following the burial.

The family would appreciate memorial contributions to be made to the Robert M King Funeral Home, 23 Church St. Granville, N.Y. 12832 to help them with Tony’s final expenses or the Granville Rescue Squad, POB 153, Granville, N.Y. 12832.
