John C. “Butch” McPhee, 60, of

, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009.

 Born on June 8, 1949, in Glens Falls, he was the son of Shirley E. (Austin) McPhee and the late John F. McPhee.

  Butch graduated from Whitehall High School, class of 1967.  He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969 and retired in 1990 as a technical sergeant after 21 years of active service. He worked at the Granville Central School as an in-school suspension monitor.  He then graduated from A.C.C. with a degree as a registered nurse.  He was employed at the Indian River Rehabilitation Center in Granville starting as a CNA and later became a RN nurse manager.
  He was a member of the American Legion, Post 83 of Whitehall, and the Granville S.A.D.D. adviser.  He was a former volleyball coach and track coach for Granville High School, coach for American Legion baseball, coach for A.C.C. volleyball and a coach for the women’s softball and volleyball teams at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and also enjoyed bowling.

 Butch was an avid runner, enjoyed run-a-thons for S.A.D.D. and participated in the Trans-America marathon from California to New York City in 1992.  He was also in the Westport 24- hour marathons and the Boston Marathon.

  He is predeceased by his father, John F. McPhee, who died in 1999.

 Besides his mother of Whitehall, he is survived by his wife of 15 years, Bonnie Cosey of Granville; his first wife, Monica (Doty) Freeman of Arkansas; one son, Michael John McPhee and his wife, Kristina, of Brant Lake; one daughter, Angela Dawn Bartholomew and her companion, Cara Catalfamo, of Hudson Falls;  one stepson, Erich Petty and his companion, Carrie Bean, of Franklin, N.H.; two stepdaughters, Kathleen Petty of Clifton Park and Kellie (Petty) DeKalb and her husband, Eric, of Granville; three sisters, Lisa Fleury and her husband, Rick, of Glens Falls, Kathleen Laiacona and her husband, Art, of Whitehall and Lori Gordon and her husband, Scott, of Whitehall; 10 grandchildren, Charissa Cronk, Jacob McPhee, Liam McPhee, David Bartholomew, Benjamin Bartholomew, Rebecca Petty, Leighann Petty, Jonathon Petty, Faith Winchell, Kaelyn May-Irene DeKalb; nieces and nephews, Andrew Fleury, Erin Fleury, Nathaniel Gebo, Ryan Gebo, Shannon Gordon and her companion, Eric Wilbur, Derek Gordon, Stephanie Ripley, Carrianne Arquette and her husband, Jerry, Amanda Mazza and her husband, Kyle, Allison Cosey, Gavin Cosey, Lauryn Cosey, Lucas Bannon, Robert Bailey and Amber Battease; great niece, Julia Grace Arquette; great-nephew Seth Arquette; brothers and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Cosey Ripley, Davis (Butch) Cosey Jr. and his wife, Jane, Marguerite Cosey, Theodore Cosey, and Diana Cosey; mother and father-in-law, Davis and Susan Cosey of Tarboro, N.C., and Sharon Norton of Granville; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and John’s special friend, his late dog “Doogie.”
 A Mass of Christian burial was conducted on Saturday, Nov. 7, at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church,

, in Whitehall with the Rev. Michael Flannery, pastor, officiating.  Interment was on Monday, Nov. 9, at the Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville.
