Blood drive on Saturday

Whitehall Elks Lodge 1491 will host a blood drive Saturday in memory of one of its own.

The blood drive, which will be held at the lodge from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 8, will be held in memory of Marshall Gordon.

Gordon was a lifetime member of the Elks lodge and a former chaplain, as well as a member of Legion Post 83 and a charter member of the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company.

He was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a form cancer that affects the formation of blood cells in bone marrow, in May 2009.  The disease eventually manifested itself as acute myeloid leukemia and Gordon succumbed to the terrible disease on July 5, 2013. However, as part of his treatment, Gordon received numerous blood transfusions and the family and friends are hoping to raise awareness of the importance of giving blood.

Walk-in appointments will be welcome. As an added bonus, anyone who donates blood, will receive a $2 discount for a dinner that will be held later that day at the lodge from 4 to 6 p.m.
