T he Town of Hebron will abandon one of its roads.

Supervisor Brian Campbell said the town voted earlier this month to abandon Pfitzie Road. The action essentially eliminates the town’s liability on the road, although it doesn’t prevent people from traveling on the road.

The town has not maintained the road in years and Campbell said it seldom, if ever, sees traffic.

The roadway was one of four roads the town had considered abandoning. Officials also explored the possibility of eliminating its liability on Oak Hill Road, West Campbell Lane and Wilson Lane.

But Campbell said the town board declined to make a decision on those roads after a handful of people spoke out against the idea during a public hearing earlier this month.

All four of the roads have seen little traffic and received no maintenance in many years. Campbell described some as private “driveways.”

Wilson Lane, which begins in Hebron and ends in Granville, used to provide access to several parcels, nearly of all of which are now owned by a single property owner. The road isn’t even marked.

Hebron officials had asked Granville to abandon the road, but officials declined earlier this month to do so. Councilman Ken Quick said closing the road would prevent Todd Smith from accessing property on the road. Smith is one only two property owners who own land on the road.

Officials were expected to revisit the matter after Hebron voted on, but with Hebron choosing not to abandon Wilson Lane, its unlikely the matter will be revisited in Granville.

Campbell said it would be a few months before Pfitzie Road was officially abandoned. The other roads are unlikely to be abandoned any time soon.
