The state Department of Motor Vehicles has extended its mobile DMV schedule for Granville, Whitehall and other area communities.
Instead of ceasing at the end of the year as originally planned, the mobile unit will travel to area communities including Whitehall and Granville through next spring.
Julie Hunt, supervisor, said DMV decided to extend the schedule because of the positive feedback and growing turnout each of the sites has gotten.
“It’s been very well-received,” she said.
It’ll also open a half-hour earlier, at 9:30 a.m.
“We’ll open a little earlier because we’re getting pretty good at setting things up,” Hunt said. Opening at 9:30 a.m. will allow it to see more people and process more transactions. “Some days there are people waiting at the door,” she added.
The mobile unit brings DMV services to local villages, making license renewals and registrations easy. Instead of having to drive 30 minutes to the Fort Edward DMV or even farther to the Wilton Mall office, residents can catch the mobile DMV when it’s in town.
It started off in our area earlier this year as a PILOT program.
“We’ve seen a tremendous response in all of the communities,” said Hunt, who measures the amount of revenue generated by each mobile unit and keeps track of which communities people are traveling from.
She said more than 40 people and about 25-50 transactions are handled by the each of the mobile DMVs in Granville, Whitehall and Greenwich during each session.
“We’re only six months into this, so it’s nice to see the growth,” Hunt added.
People typically stop by the mobile DMV to renew licenses and registrations, but the group carries license plates and motorcycle permit tests too. The mobile unit can do anything except services that require photos.
“We wanted to provide a nice public service,” Hunt said. “People are happy they are in the communities.”
The mobile unit will be in Granville on Dec. 7, Jan. 4, Feb. 1, March 1, April 5, May 3 and May 31 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the village offices on Quaker Street.
Whitehall will be visited Nov. 16, Nov. 30, Dec. 21, Jan. 18, Feb. 15, March 15, March 29, April 19 and May 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Whitehall Municipal Building.
The DMV will also set up a satellite office in Greenwich on the following dates: Nov. 23, Dec. 14, Dec. 28, Jan. 11, Jan. 25, Feb. 8, Feb. 22, March 8, March 22, April 12, April 26, May 10 and May 24.
